Helio P80

Aside from CPU and GPU benchmarks, modern chipsets need to worry about AI performance too. The upcoming Snapdragon 8150 from Qualcomm may claim the top spot, at least in Android-land.

A test of the dev platform (i.e. a prototype board) shows close to double the performance of the current Snapdragon 845. Which, according to the benchmark, is an even match to Huawei’s latest Kirin 980.

The MediaTek Helio P segment chipsets are designed for slim profile smartphones. With the MediaTek Helio P series, we focused on optimizing the systems-on-chip for battery efficiency without overly-compromising on performance and user experience. Premium MediaTek Helio features like multimedia and connectivity are still central to its design. AI-Benchmark is a testing tool that provides a score for processors based on how well they perform in different computer vision related tasks. Snapdragon 8150 and Helio P80 performed the best in.

Speaking of the latest Kirin, Huawei was touting a 2x improvement in AI performance over the 970, but as far as this benchmark is concerned, it’s more like a 15% bump. The Kirin 980 score is just under that of the Snapdragon 845.

There’s a catch – the Snapdragon 845 score from the OnePlus 6 is spectacular, the one from the Pixel 3 is merely “meh”. Both have the same chipset, except the Google phone has a dedicated core that handles the image processing magic. So, these scores are somewhat questionable.

Still, we were surprised to see which chipset won second place – MediaTek’s Helio P80. It scores much higher than the S845, nearly as high as the Snapdragon 8150. This will be a massive jump from the current Helio P60/P70 (a +200% boost!).

It's used in Camera Module and in Heavy multitasking such as playing games using separate neural core, AI enhances the overall performance of the processing unit thereby giving lag-free experience.

I live in Norway, manufacturer warranty isn't really all that interesting, we have a 5 year 'warranty' for electronic devices sold in Norway. So as long as one buys it here, one has support for five years.

Word document. AI processing sound good, but what real-world phone apps actually use it in any demanding sense?

Helio P70 Vs Helio G80

ADVERTISEMENTS

Evernote yearly cost. The Realme U1 (review) became the first smartphone to be powered by the MediaTek Helio P70 and the Taiwanese chipset-designer is already teasing another premium mid-range chipset — The Helio P90. While the P70 is still expected to power more devices and an unreleased MediaTek Helio P80 is topping AI benchmark charts, the Helio P90 will reportedly be “powerful, efficient and have groundbreaking AI”.

Helio P80 Vs G80

MediaTek posted a teaser video on Twitter claiming higher speed, efficiency and “groundbreaking AI”, but revealed nothing more. The AI part of the claims could be believable considering the Helio P80 recently topped a dedicated AI benchmark. It came second to Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 8150.

MediaTek’s dream of having a flagship high-end chipset ended with the poor performance of the Helio X30 chipset, and since then the company has majorly focused on improving the mid-rangee segment. The Helio P60 has powered devices in India ranging from the sub-10,000 segment to ones priced above Rs 20,000. The Helio P70 is the successor to the popular chipset and is built on a 12nm FinFET manufacturing process promising higher efficiency. It also features a multi-core APU to better handle AI tasks.

The Helio P80 has not been officially announced but rumours about the chipset reveal it will be built on the same 12nm manufacturing process by TSMC but with a new architecture with further improvements in AI. In the AI benchmark, the Helio P80 outperformed the newly announced Kirin 980 by Huawei that is built on a 7nm process.

Helio P80

The Helio P80 is expected to debut in the Oppo R19 next year. According to a report by Taiwan Business Times, MediaTek has worked hard on the new chipset to be considered for the Oppo flagship. To note, the Oppo R15 marked the debut of the Helio P60 in the first half of 2017, but the Oppo R17 switched to a Qualcomm chipset.

Taiwanese supply chain sources have revealed that the MediaTek Helio P80 will be the company’s flagship product for the first half of 2019 and will have an ARM-based octa-core CPU architecture. It seems strange for MediaTek to tease the successor to an unreleased chipset, but we suppose it could have something to do with Qualcomm announcing it’s new flagship chipset on December 4.
